What is a CORF?

CORF - Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Facility.
A Medical facility that provides outpatient therapy treatment to a variety of people.

Who can own a CORF?

Just about everyone with the exception of those with a felony conviction or bankruptcy. You are not required to have a medical background.

How can you own a medical facility without a medical background?

You hire staff with strong medical backgrounds. For example, the clinical administrator is an individual you want to have an extensive medical background. The person who holds this position with insure that the facility complies with all Medicare requirements and interacts with referral sources. In addition, your CORF must have a Medical Director. This person will be an MD or DO who is responsible for overseeing the medical operations of your facility.

Why would a practicing physician want to serve as my CORF Medical Director?

Medical Director is a paid position for supervising the your medical operations and reviewing patient files to insure that patients are receiving proper and complete treatment. The medical director is neither expected nor required to work soley from your CORF location. (The anti-referral rules generally prohibit a physician from referring patients to a facility that they own, but do not prohibit a physician from referring patients to a facility for which they serve as the medical director.)

Why did Congress approve the creation of CORF?

A cost effective means of providing multiple therapy treatment to patients at a lower cost than in-patient hospital treatment.

Has the CORF program changed since its inception?

Yes. Congress changed the ruling to allow CORFs to be paid on a fixed payment basis. Thus allowing CORF owners to earn a profit. CORFs continue to be Medicare "Part A" providers which allows them to be paid more than other providers for outpatient treatment services.

What type of services must be made available at a CORF?

  • Medical Director
  • Physical Therapy
  • Psychological or social services

What are some of the optional services that a CORF may provide?

What makes CORF employment more appealing?

CORF hours are nearly always Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. In addition, CORF employees typically receive higher rates of pay without the political pressures of the hospital.

Where do CORF patients come from?

Patients are referred to the facility by physicians, insurance companies, hospitals, case management nurses, etc.

How long does a patient receive therapy in a CORF?

There are no limitations on duration of therapy as long as the treatment is medically necessary.

Why do patients choose being treated at a CORF instead of at the local hospital?

The number one reason is because they can go home at the end of therapy treatment. Parking is usually simple and easily accessible. There are no long walks or waiting periods involved with CORF therapy.

What are the benefits of owning a CORF?

It allows owners very significant incomes, benefit packages, retirement plans, and bonuses, in addition to profits from operation and sale of the facility.

What makes owning a CORF an extraordinary business opportunity?

CORFs provide services primarily to senior citizens. Medicare eligible beneficiaries have increased in number from 19 million in 1965 to approximately 35 million today. The patient base is already in place and continues to grow every day.
